Useful WhatsApp Features You Might Be Missing

For most Indian smartphone users, WhatsApp isn't just a messaging app — it's the default channel for everything from family group chats to small-business orders. Yet most of these genuinely useful features stay buried in menus most people never open.

Disappearing messages, set by default for new chats

You can set any chat — or all new chats by default — to automatically delete messages after 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days. Useful for sensitive one-time information like OTPs shared with family, or simply keeping chat storage from growing indefinitely.

Star important messages so they don't get lost

Long-press any message and star it to save it to a dedicated, searchable "Starred Messages" list — genuinely useful for pinning an address, a payment confirmation, or a message you'll need to find again in a group chat with hundreds of unread messages.

Mute a noisy group without leaving it

You can mute a group's notifications for anywhere from 8 hours to a full year, while still being able to check it whenever you choose — far better for family or society groups than leaving and potentially causing offence.

Two-step verification, worth turning on today

Under Settings → Account → Two-step verification, you can add a PIN that's required if anyone ever tries to register your number on a new device — a genuinely important protection against the common SIM-swap and account-takeover scams that specifically target WhatsApp.

Link WhatsApp on a computer without keeping your phone connected

Multi-device support means you can stay logged into WhatsApp Web or the desktop app even if your phone is off or has no internet connection, as long as it originally linked with an active connection — a genuine improvement over the earlier requirement to keep your phone connected at all times.

View-once photos and videos

For a photo or video you only want the recipient to see once — like a document photo shared temporarily — the view-once option (the "1" icon next to the send button when attaching media) deletes it from the chat after it's opened.

Quickly find any media, link or document shared in a chat

Open any chat's info screen to see every photo, video, link and document ever shared in that conversation, organised and searchable — far faster than scrolling back through months of messages.

Use WhatsApp Business features even on a personal account for small transactions

If you occasionally sell or take orders informally — festival sweets, tailoring, tuition — a free WhatsApp Business account (separate from your personal number, or on a second SIM) adds a catalogue feature, automatic away messages and quick replies, all without needing a website.

Frequently Asked Questions
